Symbol of Strength - Bison
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Recognized as a symbol of strength and unity by Native American cultures the bison like the cultures that revere it is a survivor. As the largest land mammal in North America, a male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. It was built to withstand the variable and rugged landscapes for which it calls home. Even after its population which once numbered in the millions was decimated almost to the brink of extinction by the western expansion of Europeans in the 1800’s it has thankfully survived. It is a creature that commands respect by its sheer size and presence alone. On May 9th, 2016 the bison became the official National Mammal of the United States.
