Ancient Migration – Sandhill Cranes

Ancient Migration – Sandhill Cranes

Kearney, NE

Sandhill cranes are one of Earth’s oldest species of birds. For thousands of years, they have migrated through Nebraska’s Platte River valley every spring. The Platte is believed to have formed around 10,000-12,000 years ago. Fossils of sandhill crane ancestors have been found in Nebraska, predating the formation of the Platte River by millions of years.
