Scavengers
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
A bison carcass killed by wolves in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley offers a bounty of nutrients and calories for scavengers big and small. A grizzly tries to defend its claimed portion while ravens and a single vulture move in, all the while a coyote rests quietly nearby waiting his turn. The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone in 1995 has led to an increase in population for all the scavengers such as grizzly bears, coyotes, eagles, and ravens who have benefited from the carcasses left behind by the park’s wolf packs.
