Bull Elk - Preparing for the Rut

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

During the shorter days of autumn bull elk have several different behaviors during the mating season known as “The Rut.” One of these displays is when they dig their antlers through bushes, and shrubs while also scraping vegetation from the ground to purposefully add vegetation to their antlers which is believed to help make them appear larger which could help them be more attractive to females along with showing their dominance to other males.
