Harlequin at LeHardy Rapids. Male & female harlequin ducks at Yellowstone’s LeHardy Rapids.

Harlequin at LeHardy Rapids

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

A pair of harlequin ducks perch on a rock and timber above Yellowstone’s LeHardy Rapids. Harlequin duck populations are declining throughout the West, and they are rare in Montana & Wyoming. They are the only North American duck species specialized to fast moving water habitats. Each year near clear mountain streams female harlequins will return to where they were born to breed and raise their chicks. In the early fall they will winter on the rugged waters of the northern Pacific coast. Unique to most duck species who migrate north and south, harlequins’ migratory pattern is east and west.
